County Treasurer Basic Responsibilities
The County Treasurer’s primary responsibility is the collection of various taxes. The largest dollar amounts come from the collection of Real Property Taxes, however other types of taxes, such as Manufactured Home, Hotel-Motel, and Special Assessments Taxes fall under the duties of the County Treasurer. In Addition, the County Treasurer is also the safekeeper of all the taxes collected from various taxing districts, such as schools, cities, townships, and villages, as monies collected by various county departments.
It is essential that the County Treasurer efficiently and effectively collect the appropriate monies in a timely manner so that the collected funds can be appropriated accordingly. It is also just as important that the county treasurer remain an organized safekeeper of the collected monies to ensure the well-being of the taxpayers is constantly being maintained. In an effort to remain as transparent and organized as possible, daily financial statements of the deposits collected from the various departments are prepared and submitted to the County Auditor’s office. The Treasurer’s office must also provide a monthly statement to the Auditor’s office that shows a balanced figure. With this being said, the Treasurer’s office redeems all checks issued by the Auditor’s office.
The County Treasurer must be an integral leader that remains fiscally responsible at all moments. It is important that the Treasurer be able to invest funds to safeguard the County’s economic stability, but it is also important that the Treasurer authorize separate funds that can be made readily available. If any new, additional, or enhanced accounting procedures are thought to better advance the collection or handling accountability of the county’s money, the County Treasurer will work closely with the Auditors of State Examiners.
